    Honest Shopping

Here in our office rather in almost every office I have visited in
Australia, there are different sweets and other edibles available on the
concept of honest shopping. So what happens is that we have a box full of
different edibles (chocolates, chips, sandwiches etc) and every item has its
price tag sticked to it, a money box is there as well. You shall pick up
your thing and pay the amount in this box. No one's around to check if you
have paid or not, no cameras nothing. It is honest buying, they trust most
of the people here that they will act honestly and always pay whenever they
take out a thing to eat from this box. This box is refilled almost weekly.
This concept is very strange for me, it is not that all Australians are
honest but it shows such a large number of people are, that they market
things this way. It gives convenience to you, sitting at the office if
you feel like having a chocolate you need not to go all the way to the store
just hit the kitchen and have it. And with such an ease and temptation these
    companies are doing good business.

Whenever I see these boxes, it reminds me of my time working in Pakistan for
one of the best IT companies. The company is famous for recruiting only the
best. Before lunch the office boy used to come and ask every individual if
he/she wishes to order something from the market, mostly people used to
order their lunches or soft drinks. He used to bring all these items and put
it in the refrigerator. Almost every second day we used to find that someone
who ordered something couldn't find his thing, although the office boy
brought his things. Someone else must have eaten his lunch leaving this guy
hungry and angry. And with soft drinks this was a very common practise,
people knowing that the soft drinks in the refrigerator are pre-ordered,
many a times those who didn't order it just have it. This thing went to such
an extent that once we planned to have a camera placed near by to catch the
    miscreant. Good old days!!!

Okay I feel my sugar level is down, better hit the kitchen and do some
    honest shopping myself.

    My First Linux Installation

The other day I installed Linux on my laptop, something I thought I will never even consider all the more do it in reality. More and more work in unix at office and finally a Unix training paved way towards learning something which is associated with Geeks. I for one got windows on my first pc and since then I never had an urge to think about anything else but the new versions of windows. But now I have installed unix and one thing I like about it is when you are working on unix and specially on the console to me it seems a more intelligent way of interfacing with the computer. But to all my friends who love using windows (which i still do) trust me for a home pc you can do almost everything in linux what you normally do in a pc like checking mail, using internet, printing stuff etc. As per playing all the latest games I still have to ask someone.

    Pursuit of Happyness

One sometimes watch a movie, TV commercial, drama, read a book or just an article from the newspaper which leaves an everlasting impression in the mind. Pursuit of Happyness a movie starring Will Smith did exactly that to me. It is based on a true story of a person's life from rags to riches. This is the story of Christopher Gardner, the owner and CEO of Christopher Gardner International Holdings with offices in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. The strong acting by Will Smith keeps you involved in the movie so much that at the end you feel it ended too soon. I will recommend this movie to all for its strong message of going after your dreams with passion against whatever odds, all you need is to believe in yourself and your goals.

A good book after a long time

I became Jeffrey Archer's ardent fan after reading "Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less". A book, I still never think twice recommending to my friends.

When Jeffrey Archer was serving his sentence recently the books he wrote like Prison Diary, I was not too impressed and almost forgot about him when I started my pursuit of reading books by different writers and made a point to give a gap of at least 3 books before picking up a second book by a writer I have already read.

The other day while I was browsing through the books section of a store I saw this book in new arrivals, "A Prison Of Birth" by Jeffrey Archer. And I picked it up and went through the summary and found many similarities to his book "Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less". It looked like a book about a common man's revenge against very strong personalities against all odds.

I am still in the first quarter of this book and have not completed but I am loving it. Jeffrey Archer has done it again and I think it is going to be a best seller for sure.

Note-13Mar2008: Completed the book yesterday and it ended with no major surprises meaning a good book to read.

So You Think You Can Golf!!!

Yeah the topic is taken from one of the shows I have been watching lately "So you think you can Dance", but that was the question I was asked lately. Here our HR organized a Golf Day. So far my love with golf was 2 failed attempts at mini golf and that I can proudly say I know Tiger Woods.

With a lot of apprehensions that I will make a fool of myself that also in front of the whole company I decided to take the challenge. Considering how often people like me get a chance to have a swing.
But I really enjoyed it. It was good fun and a nice way of meeting colleagues. We had 4 teams with 4 players each. And we played in such a way that every one strikes the ball and we choose the best hit and play from there onwards. So it was good and I was able to connect quite nicely a couple of times.

Got a bit tiring in the end as my team didn’t take the cart and walked all the nine holes we played but it was an evening I enjoyed.
In the end the barbecue helped give back us our energies :)

    Halal Chicken in Melbourne

Today I was roaming in safeway here and found baiada products ... reading it a bit closely i found halal mentioned on one side of the box.
And going through there website in detail, it discloses this:

    Halal

    Our role in Halal Manufacturing
Australia today is a multiracial and multicultural country, where different types of customs, traditions and food are abundant within society.
Halal food does not taste any different from any other non-Halal products. For something to be described as Halal, it basically means that it must conform to the Islamic dietary laws and be produced in accordance with important Halal preparation guidelines.
Baiada is one of the largest Halal certified poultry producers in Australia. Our Halal range incorporates a variety of standard Baiada fresh and frozen poultry, including whole chickens, chicken pieces, and breast and thigh fillet. We also produce an extensive range of halal further processed products.

    I am back ....

After a gap of one year three months, one career change, one country change and one successful marriage I am back ... I don't know why I stopped writing once I left Qatar. And that day when I wrote my last blog entry sitting at the waiting lounge of Qatar airport is still fresh in my mind and seems like just a few days back thing but so much has happened since then that it takes me a while to feel everything and take it in. Anyways I hope to start writing and try to keep my blog a bit more active once again.

Another Phase of my Career ...

Right now am sitting at the Qatar Airport waiting for my flight to Dubai. It will be in an hours time. Now when I look back its been a good experience

I came to Qatar back in June to work on a project for a local bank here. It was my first international assignment. I had so far got the chance to work with foreign clients from US to Gulf previously but never got the chance to visit any of these countries. But this time the project was such that it had to be developed sitting at the client side thus I came to Qatar as a consultant to work on this project. And it has finished succesfully and now am moving to Dubai on my next assignment.

Its been a journey with ups and downs, saw days when I didnt know whether I will be able to find a place to sleep next day to days when I was living in a luxurious fully furnished apartment. From tough clients to difficult times at the project. Flexible working hours to same food every week :).Alot happened and I believe everything helped me become a better person and was a good learning curve.

Now as am moving to Dubai on my next assignment I consider myself a more mature a person and better equipped to handle clients in this region, why I say that can't explain enough till you have to come and deal with them yourself :) .....

So Qatar thanks for your hospitality .. hopefully sometime in my life I will come back here on a visit.

Finally I have done it ....

Ahhh .. finally I have been able to complete this novel ... "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy. I started this massive novel I guess 2 and a half months back and I didn't let any distraction come in my way and today I can proudly add it to the list of books I have read.

It's a classic but it's massive. Almost 1000 large pages in very small fonts .. takes you to a journey of war being fought between france and russia, and takes you close to alot of people who live during those times ... and how things effect their lives and the love, hatred and jeolousy, integral part of ones emotion are portrayed beautifully. Am glad I didnt leave this novel in between, but it require some patience that i must admit to complete such a novel.

    Pass a Smile :)

Sometimes it is nice to surprise someone and see the reaction, I normally don't do it but the other day I did something which turned out to be a pretty funny incident for me at least.

I love galaxy choclate ... I went out of my room with one in my mouth and a couple in my pockets, mind you they were the mini bars and not the full ones ... So i went to the lift and it was occupied by an English guy (must be in his 50s). I offered one choclate to him, he took the choclate but was totally surprised. And asked why? I said because I don't like eating alone. He just liked my answer and all the while he kept looking at the choclate and at me with a smile and expression that I cannot explain or portray here. As soon as he left the lift he laughed so loudly that I could hear it in the lift even with the doors closed. It all gave me lot of joy and I wondered how easy it is to make ones day or pass a smile :).

    Only In Qatar ..

And you think this sign is directing you towards the airport ... think again ... it is telling you the direction of a market :) ... Only in Qatar .... isn't it.

When Left was Right and Right was Left ....

My sister have recently been blessed with a baby boy ... and it has brought such a great joy to all our lives that it is
    un-explainable.

On the same day I decided to take my friends for dinner. Here in Qatar their is a nice resturant of whose karhai and Gulab Jaman we all love ... so it was finalised that we shall go their. As we were 5 friends so we had to take 2 taxis. First 3 of my friends got a taxi and went ahead and I and another friend were in the 2nd taxi. After we sat down we realised that we both don't know the way to this resturant. We called our friends and amazingly they had got lost as well, but they told us the locality and luckily our taxi driver who although had not heard about this resturant knew that area. So we relaxed and started talking just to realise after a while that we were lost badly.

I asked the driver to stop the car so that I inquire about it from one of the shops. I asked a person and he told me very confidantly that you just go back and take a right from the third turn and you will find it. I was happy that finally we will reach it and told the directions to the driver and relaxed. But it wasn't my lucky day as that resturant was no where to be seen and we were lost badly now, even calling our friends again wasn't gr8 help since we didnt know where we were and the driver was lost.

When we started losing some hope Allah sent an angel for us and we saw a guy walking by the road and we stopped the car to ask directions, he knew the resturant but couldnt direct us so he sat in the car and started travelling with us. And started directing the driver, after a while we passed infront of the same shop from which I had got the directions earlier and rather then turning right this time as we were told earlier we turned left and the place started looking familiar and their it was the resturant where we wanted to go :).

So bc of the left was right and right was left for the guy with whom I got the directions, we got all mixed up and lost, but am so glad bc of the new baby that I enjoyed the whole ride although it cost me almost triple the regular fare :)

    Life and it's funny cycles

I am not that good at English and am not sure if the word "Nostalgia" can be related to bad memories, as whenever I've been nostalgic the memories have given me kind of joy. But the other day I was a bit nostalgic about something which I used to despise but the context was such that it put a smile on my face.

Maybe my destiny was to become a computer engineer, and since most of my life I had to type instead of writing my handwriting was absurd from the beginning. Ya I know what you thinking that my destiny could have been a doctor as well but I was pretty horrible at drawings as well thus didn’t like biology that much with all the circulatory systems of a frog etc. Thus it had to be a computer engineer.

So getting back to the point, since my handwriting was abysmal, my cousins used to taunt me and the elderly cousins who were teachers at that time tried to warn me that I shall do something about my handwriting otherwise I won’t get good marks specially in my board examinations of 10th grade. Whenever this topic used to come, I always vexed since all my trying I just couldn't improve it. Finally I worked extremely hard and when my 10th grade result came, I scored highest marks among all the cousins with the same handwriting, and that so called record has yet to be broken by someone.

The other day I was sitting at the office and we had to send some documents to a client, on which the captions were to be handwritten. We were 3 guys their and I asked whose handwriting is good enough for the task and both the other guys just backed off saying they have forgotten to write :) .... and then I wrote all the captions and my handwriting was kind of appreciated :) .... at that time I just got nostalgic and felt triumphant as it was the first time my handwriting was appreciated :) ... Life and its funny cycles.

    After a gap...

So there has been sometime, since I last scribbled a few thoughts in here....and there is always a certain amount of uneasiness before starting something after a gap. I don't know why but it always been like this to me and am sure to many more.

So lets get back to the point .... A lot has happened in my life during this time. First I went to Karachi from Lahore to conduct a workshop in MCB Karachi, then I was transferred to UAE. And these days am sitting in Qatar. Thus you can see in such a short time I have been kept busy one way or the other.

There is a lot to share regarding my stay in Dubai and Qatar and I will try to do that here now a bit more regularly.

I have read a couple of books during this time like Panic, Invisible Armies and 1984. These days am reading Historian. All books been good in their own way, 1984 is a different book and if you are a regular reader then you shall get hold of this book. This book was written in 1949 and published in 1950 and it is about how the writer thought life will be in 1984.

I think that is enough to remove the dust off my writing skills .... Adios for now.

    Learning from others Experiences

I have been reading books quite often now. Last year I decided to broaden my vision and the best way was to read books of as many different writers as possible. Initially I was reading but of a selected few, it took me sometime to get out of the influence of those few.
I try to read all kind of books whether they be love novels or mystery books or for that matter controversial books like Da vinci Code :).
One genre, although I have read a handful of books, been touching me most. It is about the philosphy of life. Since such books leave a lasting impact I try not to read them frequently. But books like Conquest of Happiness by Bertrand Russell, Why Bad Things Happen to Good People by Harold S. Kushner and tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom are books which I will recommend all. As they touch daily life issues in such a way that after reading them your vision will be broadened and it helps one becoming a better human being.

    A Different Experience

Yesterday I left a little late from office. I was in the car and a few ideas started popping up in my head. Ideas which I would like to write upon. By the time I reached home I had compiled a couple of paragraphs in my mind.

I got busy in dinner but in my sub conscious I was doing the same exercise over and over again. Later I was watching one of my favorite TV shows and I reached a point when I couldn't concentrate any further, I went and picked up a pad wrote down everything once. I corrected it and wrote it down again with clarity. Read it a couple of times and then I was at ease and able to relax.

I don't know if there is any word for such an experience. But it was a different experience and I had fun.

Another letter published in Daily Dawn.

In the past one week I had a chance to come to office daily in a motor rickshaw. I found every driver mincing words against the recent ban on their using the mall road Lahore. I thought of writing a few words about this predicament and that got published in the daily dawn. It can be read by clicking the following link:

    Our Obsession with India

There is a very strange psychological aspect and am guilty as well, that in Pakistan we are so much in aw of Indians that in every walk of life we try to compare them and for us the only goal is to be better than India or do good against them. I believe it is a great hurdle in our flight to greatness as a nation. As we in most cases are not competing with the world but just India. This thing holds true in it's most poisonous form in sports and those following it. Like if e.g. Pakistan cricket team beat England, Srilanka or for that matter Australia and gets beaten by India, we just can't stand it and we will curse our team and make allegations of match fixing and all. In hockey a couple of times we been 5th in a 6 nation tournament but if we had beaten India in our match we were satisfied with it. This one victory covered all other poor displays of our team in the tournament. Recently two of my friends were talking about the A1 grand prix and a friend asked are we ahead of India. That just sums up our way of thinking that we just don't look at the bigger picture rather our needle is stuck at just one thing.

It's been more than half a century since our independence and we have still not achieved much rather have lost far more. I believe only if somehow we stop our obsession with India nothing can stop us to rise as a great nation. I think it's about time that we increase our spectrum and start competing with the world.

Another Marketing Gimmick ... A good one though

I was going through this article "When Consumers Can Write the Ads" on ecommercetimes website.
    http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/9klFJqniKqGVnz/When-Consumers-Can-Write-the-Ads.xhtml

And I really enjoyed the whole idea of this latest marketing gimmick. That gives access
to the consumers some video clips of a product and allow them to make an advertisement out of it and surely the best one wins some good prize.

The idea is so raw and fresh that I really liked it. I even went to one of the websites mentioned in this article and tried it out and loved the ease of the whole process
and made a few ads myself.

I think in Pakistan this can be used by different companies belonging to telecom, beverages etc. And the one who realizes it and uses it upfront will win the race. Let’s see....

I think people will like to try their hands on it and sharpen their film making skills. So here is the link of the one I used, enjoy and have fun www.chevyapprentice.com.
